Luminar’s Full Editor Comes Free for a Year on Googlebook
Googlebook buyers get 12 months of Luminar’s full laptop editor, four times longer than the Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom trials on the same machines.
Skylum opened a full Luminar photo editor for Googlebook on October 5, with 12 months free for buyers, including the AI tools. The app was rebuilt for large screens and, Skylum said, meets Google’s Tier 1 bar for keyboard shortcuts, resizable windows, and drag-and-drop.
Googlebook laptops starting at $899 went on sale in the US on October 4, then in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia on October 5. Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom already run on the same machines. Their free trials last 3 months. Luminar’s lasts 12 months, then $39.99 a year in the US unless you cancel.
A Rebuilt Editor Meets Google’s New Laptop
Googlebook OS sits on the Android stack with desktop pieces taken from ChromeOS, which is why a Play Store photo app can grow a real laptop chrome. Skylum said it worked with Google before launch so Luminar could use that chrome from day one, rather than stretching a phone layout across a 14-inch OLED.
The company already sold Luminar on Mac, Windows, Android, iOS, iPad, and ChromeOS. The Googlebook build is a new client for that account, not a web wrapper. Buyers download it from the Play Store after they switch the laptop on, then sign in with the same login they use on an Android phone.
Ivan Kutanin, CEO of Skylum, tied the release to Google’s new laptop category rather than to a point update on phones.
We’re excited to welcome the new laptop category from our partners at Google and bring a high-quality photo editing experience to Googlebook users from day one.
Ivan Kutanin, CEO of Skylum
That day-one seat matters because the loudest question around Googlebook has been app support, not battery charts. A photo editor that resizes, takes a mouse, and opens a folder is a laptop proof, not a Play Store listing.
Adobe Gets Three Months, Skylum Gets Twelve
Google already put Adobe on the hardware. The launch blog lists native Photoshop, Lightroom, and CapCut, and the perk sheet stacks short Adobe trials next to a full year of Luminar. Dieter Bohn, who works on the product at Google, spelled that mix out when pre-orders opened on September 21.
Googlebooks start at $899 and come with a full year of Google AI Pro (with 5TB of storage), 3 months of YouTube Premium, BandLab, Adobe Photoshop, and CapCut. Plus 12 months of Luminar and GeForce NOW.

Google’s own offer terms still treat the two photo vendors as different deals. Adobe’s Photoshop and Lightroom trials run 3 months and then bill at $7.99 a month unless you stop them. Luminar’s trial runs 12 months, four times as long, and then bills $39.99 a year in the US. Canada is inside the Luminar offer and outside the Photoshop and Lightroom offers.
THE PHOTO APPS IN THE GOOGLEBOOK BUNDLE
| App | Free period | US price after | Canada in the offer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luminar Photo Editor | 12 months | $39.99 a year | Yes |
| Adobe Photoshop | 3 months | $7.99 a month | No |
| Adobe Lightroom | 3 months | $7.99 a month | No |
Premiere sits on a third clock: 3 months free, including Canada, then $7.99 a month. Google AI Pro rides along for 12 months with 5 TB of storage, then $19.99 a month. CapCut Pro is 3 months for new users. None of those titles replace a stills editor that can merge HDR frames and run a batch at the desk, which is the gap Luminar is being paid, in distribution, to fill.
What the Laptop App Adds That Phones Never Had
Skylum’s press note is blunt about the phone and tablet builds: they did not get resizable windows, drag-and-drop, or proper keyboard shortcuts. The Googlebook client adds those, plus hover states, multitasking, and file handling, after what the company called several rounds of testing on Googlebook OS.
The launch also brings three tools Skylum groups with professional editing, not with tap-and-go phone work.
LUMINAR TOOLS BUILT FOR THE LAPTOP
- Desktop chrome: Resizable windows, full mouse and keyboard support, shortcuts, hover states, multitasking, drag-and-drop, and file handling.
- Generative Erase: Object removal of the kind Skylum has sold on desktop as GenErase, now listed for the Googlebook launch set.
- HDR Merge: Multi-shot merge that HDR Merge stayed on Windows and macOS in Skylum’s own mobile-versus-desktop split.
- Batch editing: One pass across a folder of frames, the job phones still treat as a single-image task.
- One account: The same Luminar login on an Android phone and on the Googlebook, so a phone cull can move to the laptop without a second checkout.
That last point is the product logic. Googlebook is sold as the laptop an Android phone has been waiting for. A stills app that already lives on that phone, then grows windows and batch tools on the desk, is how Skylum uses the new OS instead of fighting it.
Google Already Built Continue On Into the Laptop
Continue On is a Googlebook OS feature, not a Luminar invention. Sign in, and the laptop can pick up a phone task from the taskbar. Google’s own example is BandLab on a commute, then the same project on the desk. Files from the phone show up in the laptop Files app. Cast My Apps can stream a phone app into a desktop window.
Skylum says Luminar can use that path so an edit started on a phone finishes on the Googlebook. The press text that other recaps carried still wrapped that line in a launch caveat: “If available at launch.” Same-account editing is in the shipping list. The hand-off itself is the piece Skylum would not stamp as day-one certain.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The client: Luminar for Googlebook is in the Play Store as a large-screen build with mouse, keyboard, and resizable windows.
- The trial: Google’s terms grant a 12-month Play Store trial that then bills $39.99 a year in the US if you do not cancel.
- The account: One Luminar login covers an Android phone and the Googlebook.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- App-level hand-off: Skylum’s own launch note still hedges on Continue On being ready the day the laptops hit shelves.
- Ireland on the trial: Googlebook hardware is on sale in Ireland as of October 5, but the Luminar trial country list does not name Ireland.
Until Skylum drops the hedge, treat phone-to-laptop editing as the OS feature plus a shared login, not as a promise that every slider state will jump devices on the first boot.
The Trial Converts to $39.99 a Year
Google’s perk page files Luminar under Play Store trials, not under Skylum’s Mac and Windows one-time licences. The listing is a 12-month trial of “Luminar: Photo Editor & Enhancer.” You add a payment method at sign-up. Google says it will not charge that card until the trial ends. Then Play Store bills the standard plan, currently $39.99 a year in the United States. Skylum’s launch also listed €39.99 and £39.99 a year for those currencies.
The complimentary 12 months of Luminar is limited to one redemption per device. Qualifying countries are the United States, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and France. You must buy and activate a Googlebook by October 1, 2027, and you must redeem in Play Store by September 30, 2027. Cancel before the trial ends and Google says you will not be charged. There are no refunds on partial billing periods.
THE LUMINAR OFFER DATES
- October 1, 2026: Adobe’s 3-month Photoshop, Lightroom, and Premiere offers open for qualifying Googlebook purchases.
- October 4, 2026: First Googlebooks go on sale in the United States.
- October 5, 2026: Launch markets outside the US get hardware, and Skylum details the Googlebook Luminar client.
- September 30, 2027: Last day to redeem the Luminar trial in the Play Store.
- October 1, 2027: Last day stated to buy and activate a Googlebook for the Luminar offer.
The redeem-by date sits a day before the buy-by date in Google’s own text, so the date that actually starts the trial is September 30, 2027. Put a reminder on the calendar a week before that if you do not want the yearly charge.
A Year After the Play Store Award
This is not Skylum’s first pass at Google’s desktop. In May 2025 the company launched Luminar for Android and ChromeOS at Google I/O, with Kutanin talking up a cross-device edit. On November 19, 2025, Google named Luminar the Google Play Best Multi-Device App of 2025, citing the ability to start on one device and keep layers and structure on another.
Googlebook is the next screen in that same pitch. The phone app still does RAW work, background swaps, and masks. The laptop app is where Skylum is parking HDR Merge, batch runs, and Generative Erase next to a mouse. The 12-month trial is how that screen gets onto every qualifying unit before Adobe’s 3-month photo trials run out.
Mac and Windows Luminar remain a separate checkout, sold as a one-time purchase on Skylum’s own store. The Googlebook seat is a Play Store plan. Photographers who already pay Skylum on a Chromebook may find the same Android package on the new laptop, but the Google perk is the trial tied to a Googlebook activation, not a lifetime desktop licence.
The Play Store listing is the live checkout. Cancel before the 12 months end if you do not want Google Play to bill $39.99. Photoshop is already on the same glass for a shorter free run. Luminar is the stills editor Google gave a full year to prove the new laptop can edit, not just browse.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Luminar on Googlebook a Subscription or a One-Time Purchase?
On Googlebook it is a Google Play subscription. After the 12-month trial, Play Store bills the standard plan, currently $39.99 a year in the US, and Skylum’s launch listed €39.99 and £39.99 a year in those currencies. That is separate from Luminar on Mac and Windows, which Skylum still sells as a one-time licence on its own site rather than as this Play Store yearly plan.
Which Countries Can Redeem the 12-Month Luminar Trial?
Google’s terms name the United States, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and France. You redeem in the Play Store after you activate the laptop, you must redeem by September 30, 2027, and the terms also set a buy-and-activate cutoff of October 1, 2027. Ireland is a Googlebook hardware market as of October 5, 2026, but it is not on that Luminar trial list.
Do Googlebook Buyers Also Get Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom?
Yes. Google says Photoshop, Lightroom, and CapCut run as native apps, and the perk sheet adds 3-month trials of Photoshop, Lightroom, and Premiere. The Photoshop and Lightroom trials omit Canada, while Premiere’s 3-month trial includes Canada. After those Adobe trials, Photoshop and Lightroom are listed at $7.99 a month; Lightroom also has a $49.99-a-year prepaid option.
How Long Will Googlebook OS Receive Updates?
Google says Googlebook OS gets regular feature drops and updates for up to 10 years. That term is attached to the laptop platform, not to the Luminar trial, which still ends after 12 months and then follows Play Store billing if you stay signed up.
Can I Use One Luminar Account on a Phone and a Googlebook?
Yes. Skylum says the same account works on an Android phone and on Googlebook, and the laptop client is a Play Store download rather than a side-loaded desktop build. Google’s own Continue On feature can also pick up a phone task on the laptop taskbar, including apps such as BandLab; Skylum’s photo-specific hand-off still carried a launch caveat in the press note.
