MacStories Sells the Local AI Workflow Behind iOS 27
MacStories shipped three OS 27 reviews on September 14, then put Federico Viticci’s Notion and MLX agent pipeline behind Club Plus.
MacStories published three OS 27 reviews on September 14, 2026, then put the local AI stack that built the flagship iOS review behind Club Plus. Club members get DRM-free ebooks of iOS and iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, and watchOS 27, plus 20 extra iOS 27 shortcuts. The higher tiers are not buying more screenshots. They are buying Federico Viticci’s Notion workspace, his on-Mac agents, and a custom web app he built around that research system.
Three Reviews Cover Four Operating Systems
Federico Viticci, founder and editor-in-chief of MacStories, posted his iOS and iPadOS 27 review the morning Apple shipped the public builds. John Voorhees, the site’s managing editor, followed with macOS 27 Golden Gate and watchOS 27. Four operating systems, three reviews, one launch day. Viticci has been writing the annual iOS and iPadOS review for 11 years. This one took three months of living on the betas.
THE OS 27 LAUNCH
- Ship date: Apple released iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, and watchOS 27 on September 14, 2026.
- The iOS review: Customizable Liquid Glass, a long Siri AI chapter, iPadOS, and 15 system apps.
- His verdict: The snappiest, most stable iOS he has tested, and not a Snow Leopard release.
- macOS 27: Voorhees frames Golden Gate as cleanup after Apple silicon, leftover Apple Intelligence promises from 2024, and last year’s Liquid Glass refresh.
Viticci opens with a line he had to sit on for weeks. “After years of relentless building, it’s good to see Apple sweat the details again,” he writes. He says he struggled more this summer than in any prior year to find an angle, in part because he was not sold on Siri AI, and in part because a release built on speed and polish is hard to narrate. The review is free on the web, with interactive widgets, videos, and a chapter list that runs from Foundation Models through Shortcuts automations.
He posted the same morning that it was not a Snow Leopard year, and that the piece covers customizable Liquid Glass, iPadOS, 15 system apps, and a big Siri AI chapter.
I've been working on this for 3 months, and here it is:

Voorhees’s Golden Gate review treats the Mac update as three unfinished jobs: loose ends from the Apple silicon shift, the 2024 Apple Intelligence pledges, and the Liquid Glass pass that started with macOS Tahoe. The iOS review is the one MacStories is wrapping in extras, because that is the site’s biggest project of the year.
What Club Members Get This Week
Club MacStories, founded in 2015, still starts at $5 a month or $50 a year. The review-week bundle is the seasonal hook on top of Weekly, the Monthly Log, and an ad-free MacStories Unwind feed. This year the base tier gets all three OS ebooks, a change from recent falls when the iOS ebook sat at the bottom tier and the rest of the set sat higher up.
THE REVIEW-WEEK BUNDLE
- Three ebooks: DRM-free editions of the iOS and iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, and watchOS 27 reviews, with images and videos intact, from each member’s Downloads page.
- Twenty shortcuts: Extra ready-made iOS 27 shortcuts for Club members, due later in the week of September 14.
- Making of: Club Plus and Premier get Viticci’s write-up of his Notion setup and local MLX workflow.
- Custom web app: The same tiers get the web app he built to join that research system to Notion.
- Agents post-show: Premier members and AppStories+ subscribers get the AppStories 501 segment on the role agents played in the review.
The ebooks can go into any reader. MacStories notes they import into Readwise Reader as EPUB files. Viticci said the same day that members would get 3 ebooks, 20 shortcuts later in the week, and a deep dive into his review setup with Notion, oMLX, and a custom app he would release for members. The making-of is still being written. He calls it a change that sped up the writing and can be reused on other research jobs.
Federico’s Review Ran on Local Agents
The extras page is a membership pitch. The more useful document sat in a MacStories note on August 25, while the review was still a live Notion file. Viticci was running the project on an M3 Ultra Mac Studio, on loan from Apple, with 512 GB of RAM. Local agents on that machine, using Apple’s MLX array framework for Apple silicon, watched the workspace and filed new notes, sources, and research into the chapters he was writing.
My current workspace for my upcoming iOS and iPadOS 27 review, which lives in Notion, is entirely managed by a series of local agents running the latest DeepSeek-V4-Flash via MLX on the Mac Studio, which continuously scan the project for new notes, sources, and research material that is automatically categorized and linked in the chapters that I’m writing.
Federico Viticci, editor-in-chief, MacStories, August 25, 2026
The model is the DeepSeek-V4-Flash open-weight model. On that Studio, through oMLX, he measured generation at about 35 tokens per second. Club Plus is being asked to pay for a tour of that pipe: how the Notion database was laid out, how the local models were wired, and the web app that sits on top. Premier and AppStories+ add the spoken version on episode 501.
The Mac Studio Workspace
This is the second-order shift. For years the Club extra was an artifact of the review, an ebook, a shortcut, a wallpaper, an Obsidian plugin. This year the extra is the assembly line. Viticci has spent the past year on local models on Apple silicon, including two M4 Mac minis beside the Studio. The iOS 27 review is the first time that stack is described as the thing that “entirely managed” the flagship file.
He is blunt, in the review itself, that Siri AI is not an agent that finishes long jobs. He refuses the comparison to ChatGPT Work, Claude Cowork, Grok Bot, Hermes Agent, or OpenClaw. The machine that filed his research was not Siri. It was an open-weight model on a Mac under his desk.
A Custom App for Plus Members
The web app is the new object in the bundle. MacStories says it joins his review research system to Notion. He said he would release it for members. Until it lands, Plus and Premier are buying a promise of process, not a file they can open tonight. That is a steeper ask than an EPUB, and it is also the only extra that could outlive this OS cycle if the workflow is as portable as he says.
Siri AI Stops at the EU Border
The review’s own thesis is that iOS 27 is a geographically ambiguous update. If you have Siri AI, the year is exciting. If you do not, you are looking at paper cuts. Apple’s public page has Siri AI rolling out in English as a beta. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish are due in October. On June 8, Apple said it will not ship Siri AI in the EU on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, or watchOS 27 because of the Digital Markets Act. EU users still get it on macOS 27 and visionOS 27.
WHERE SIRI AI ACTUALLY RUNS
| Place or language | iPhone, iPad, Watch | Mac and Vision Pro |
|---|---|---|
| English, supported devices | Siri AI beta as of September 14 | Siri AI beta as of September 14 |
| French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish | Due in October | Due in October |
| European Union | Delayed on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS | Available on macOS 27 and visionOS 27 |
Supported Siri AI phones are iPhone 16 models and later, plus iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Viticci’s line is narrower than Apple’s marketing. Inferior intelligence and a lack of agent features will not impress anyone who already lives in frontier chat apps. What Siri AI can do inside Apple’s apps, and some third-party ones, is a nicer iOS-native layer than anything else on a phone. “It undeniably is a better Siri for Siri-type tasks than it’s ever been,” he writes.
The specimen work is in the paper cuts. Notes can export a full note as Markdown, with tables, colored text, and attachments in a folder that opens cleanly in Obsidian. Shortcuts can now ingest that Markdown the other way. He asked Siri to find Google Search Console mail and archive it; the system asked him to confirm 40 messages in under 10 seconds because the mail was already indexed on the phone. Describe a Shortcut, the new default when you create one, one-shots simple shortcuts in about 15 seconds. He also found he can ask Siri to do two things at once, a timer and a light, and that a third ask in the same sentence is dropped without a warning.
The same day as the review, he posted a 54-tip list of those hidden features on X. That is the piece the conversation actually grabbed. The Club extras sit one click behind a free catalog of paper cuts. Readers who want Camera Roll back via a Captured by Me filter, or a video frame saved as a full-resolution photo, do not need a membership. Readers who want the Notion schema and the agent harness do.
Review-Week Perks Go Back to iOS 12
MacStories has been bundling review-week extras since at least 2018. The objects change. The calendar does not. An ebook of the iOS review is the constant. Around it, the site has tried audiobooks, wallpapers, Drafts actions, Obsidian plugins, and shortcut packs. Process write-ups are not new either. What is new is that the process write-up is now about local models, and that it ships with a web app.
THE EXTRAS, YEAR BY YEAR
- September 17, 2018: iOS 12 extras include an audiobook, an ebook, Club-only shortcuts, and a making-of podcast.
- October 14, 2020: iOS 14 extras expand to three ebooks, wallpapers, shortcuts, and a special Weekly.
- September 12, 2022: iOS 16 extras add an Obsidian plugin and two advanced shortcuts on top of the ebook.
- September 18, 2023: iOS 17 extras pair the ebook with a making-of Weekly and two new Obsidian plugins.
- September 16, 2024: iOS 18 extras keep the ebook and wallpapers; Plus and Premier get the other OS ebooks.
- September 15, 2025: iOS 26 extras give every member the iOS ebook; Plus gets Drafts actions and Apple Intelligence shortcuts.
- September 14, 2026: All three OS ebooks move to the base Club tier; Plus adds the Notion and MLX making-of plus the custom web app.
Club Plus launched in August 2021 and still costs $10 a month or $100 a year. Premier is $12 a month or $120 a year and folds in AppStories+, which is $5 a month on its own. The $2 bump is the price of the agents conversation this week. MacStories says it has averaged 48 issues of Weekly and 12 Monthly Log issues a year since 2015. The OS extras are the September spike on that cadence.
Last year the Plus-only tools were still user-facing automations, Drafts actions and Use Model shortcuts. This year the Plus-only tools are the author’s own scaffolding. That is a different product, sold to the same list.
How the Three Tiers Split the Perks
The public review remains free. The Club pitch is flexibility (ebooks, notes, highlights) plus, at the upper two rungs, a look at how the file was built. Pricing is unchanged from the FAQ for the Club MacStories, Plus, and Premier tiers.
CLUB TIERS AND THE OS 27 EXTRAS
| Tier | Price | Review-week extras | Year-round extras that matter this week |
|---|---|---|---|
| Club MacStories | $5 a month or $50 a year | Three DRM-free OS ebooks; 20 iOS 27 shortcuts later in the week | Weekly, Monthly Log, Unwind without ads |
| Club MacStories+ | $10 a month or $100 a year | Everything above, plus the making-of and the custom Notion web app | Discord, Automation Academy, Mac Hacks, search, custom RSS |
| Club Premier | $12 a month or $120 a year | Everything in Plus, plus the AppStories+ agents post-show | AppStories+ at 192 kbps, early, without ads |
Viticci founded MacStories in April 2009. Voorhees joined in 2015, the same year the Club launched. The fall reviews are how the pair turns a summer of betas into a week that can sell memberships. This year the free artifact is still a huge iOS review and a 54-tip list. The paid artifact is a local agent stack that Siri AI, as reviewed, still cannot replace. The making-of and the web app had not landed by September 15. Those two files are what Plus is actually waiting for.
