This is journalism, not advice
Everything here is published for general information. It is reporting and explanation, written for somebody who met a term in a headline and wanted to know what it meant, and it is not financial, legal, medical, tax or immigration advice. Nobody here is your adviser, and reading us creates no professional relationship of any kind.
The distinction is not decorative. A piece explaining the shape of a yield curve tells you what the curve is and what it has historically preceded, and says nothing about what to do with your savings. A travel piece setting out a visa change explains the rule and points you at the form the government provides free, and it does not replace the government’s own guidance. A science piece on a trial explains what the trial measured, which is a different thing from a treatment plan. Where the stakes are real, take the explanation to somebody professionally responsible for your particular situation.
Accuracy, and the day a piece stops being current
We check before we publish, and how we do it is written down in our fact-checking policy. What we cannot promise is that a page is complete, or that it is still right today. We give no warranty of completeness, currency or fitness for any purpose you have in mind.
News dates in a way that catches explanations hardest. A governing body quietly rewrites a squad cost rule in the close season and every piece resting on the old version becomes wrong without a word of it changing. A regulator amends a threshold, a tax band moves, a border requirement is dropped. Our own correction log shows stale explanations clustering a few weeks after a rule change nobody announced loudly. Every article carries a date. Read the date before you rely on the piece.
News, analysis and opinion are not the same page
News reports what happened and explains the mechanism under it. Analysis reaches a judgement and shows the reasoning. Opinion argues a position and says so at the top and in the byline position, and the views in it belong to the writer rather than to the outlet, including when the outlet paid for them.
Contributed pieces from outside the newsroom are labelled as such and are the contributor’s view, checked for accuracy but not adopted as ours. Nothing in an opinion column should be read as a finding of fact about a person or a company. The rules the whole desk works to on labelling are in our editorial standards.
Links out, embeds and other people’s material
We link to documents, statements, regulations and rival reporting because an explanation with no source behind it is an assertion in a nicer font. Those destinations are not ours. We do not control their content, their availability, or what they do with your data once you arrive, and a link is a reference rather than a recommendation.
Where a story carries somebody else’s material inside it, a quote, a photograph, a chart, an embedded post or a video player, that material is used under licence, with permission, or under the fair dealing and fair use provisions letting a news outlet quote and illustrate what it reports on. Credit sits with the item. If you hold rights in something we have used and think we have overstepped, our copyright and DMCA policy sets out how to tell us and how fast we move.
Advertising, and anything that pays us a commission
The site is free and advertising pays for it. Ads are ads. They are not selected by the newsroom, they are not endorsements, and their presence next to a story says nothing about the story. Sponsored articles carry the word sponsored at the top and in the byline position and are written outside the newsroom.
Where a link earns us a commission on a purchase, the piece says so next to the link and not in a paragraph at the foot of the page. The recommendation is written as though the commission did not exist, which is easy to claim and the reason the categories we refuse are published on the advertising page. If you ever cannot tell whether something was paid for, that is a failure on our side and we want to hear about it.
If we got something wrong
Tell us. Send the link, quote the sentence, and give the right version if you have it. An explanation that was accurate and still left you no clearer counts as an error here too, and it gets rewritten rather than defended as a matter of taste.
What happens next, who decides and how the note appears on the page is in our corrections policy. We fix pieces in public on the original page and we do not delete them to tidy up the record.
Liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss or damage arising from anything you did, or did not do, on the strength of something published here. That covers money moved, contracts signed, treatments delayed, journeys booked and forms filed. It also covers loss from the site being unavailable, which will happen.
